Chuck Palahnuik is an incredible author. I absoutely love this book. I think this one may be my favorite of all his works.
Awful I threw it in the trash after reading it halfway. Palahniuk was trying too hard to be edgy and sarcastic it just comes out very lame.
he kind of lost me along the way, what with the scenes in the Renaissance Pleasure Faire-type workplace that I thought were too outside the realm of any kind of reality to serve as the satirical whimsy he was attempting; the choking in restaurants escapades that concluded in a sort of corny way; and other misteps I felt just didn't match the enthusiasm, creativity and twisted pathos that he tapped into at the start of the novel. Except. In "Fight Club," however, he gets everything right. I got hooked in from the very first chapter, with the odd "voice" of the narrator, his strange upbringing and his mother's insane character. The second chapter was so raw, real, and at the same time completely ludicrous that I was with Palahniuk for the whole ride. I like Palahniuk's writing style, but the style can't sustain a novel (for me) if the story and characters fall apart within that sparkling wordplay.
Be prepared to be shocked, intrigued, surprised and ultimately incredibly surprised when it's all over. It's hard to describe just how maniacal, cynical yet hilarious and surprising this book is. It's a fairly quick read and definitely one of Palahniuk's best; not one to miss.
The characters are silly. that's silly. The attempts to shock are silly. Books are always better than movies so I bought Choke - expecting it to be as good or better. Maybe Chuck Palahniuk will see me choking and come save me.
My wife had just watched Fight Club and kept talking about it. This book is just SILLY. The plot is silly. Maybe he'll feel so proud of himself afterwards that he'll start sending me checks every year on the anniversary of this post.Nahhhh. I bought this book for my kindle because I wanted a change of pace.
I could list a number of pejoratives to describe this book but I'll leave it simple. I devour books, especially good ones - but this one - I couldn't get it down - it made me "Choke".
